Malaysia Digital Nomad Visa: A Prime Remote Work Destination

To attract more global international talent, the Malaysian government launched the Digital Nomad Visa (DE Rantau Nomad Pass) in October 2022, allowing eligible foreign professionals to legally live and work remotely in Malaysia.


In recent years, the scope of this visa has expanded beyond Tech talents/professionals to include senior executives, legal and financial experts, and other skilled professionals, further enhancing Malaysia’s appeal as a digital nomad hub.


Qualifications of Malaysia Digital Nomad Visa

1. Eligible Applicants

(1) Digital freelancers and Independent Contractors: These are individuals working on a project-by-project basis, not tied to any single employer. Clients can be based in Malaysia or internationally.

(2) Remote Workers: Individuals employed full-time or part-time by foreign companies (non-Malaysian employers), working remotely from Malaysia.

2. Eligible Professions

(1) Tech Talents/Professionals:

  • Backend engineers, Software engineers, UX/UI designers, cybersecurity experts, Cloud computing specialists
  • Machine learning, Blockchain, Artificial intelligence, data-analysis and related field
  • Digital marketing, Digital content development, Digital creative content

(2) Non-Tech Talents/Professionals:

  • Senior Management: Founders, Chief Executive Officers (CEOs), Chief Operating Officers (COOs)
  • Finance & Legal: Finance Managers, Tax Specialists, Accountants, Legal Advisors
  • Marketing & Business: Business Development Managers, Marketing Managers, Public Relations Managers/Specialists
  • HR& Administration: HR Managers, Administrative Supervisors
  • Customer Services: Managers of Customer Success, Customer Service Representatives, Managers or Specialists
  • Supply Chain & Production Management: Production Managers, Supply Chain Managers
  • Other Related Digital Nomad Professions

3. Proof of Remote Work

(1) Digital freelancers and Independent Contractors: Must provide a valid project contract with a duration of at least 3 months (combination of contracts from multiple companies will also be accepted). Clients may be based in Malaysia  or overseas.

(2) Remote A foreign employment contract with a minimum term of 3 months is required. The employer must not be a Malaysian company.

4. Minimum Income Requirements:

(1) Tech Talents/Professionals: At least USD 24,000 per year

(2) Non-Tech Talents/Professionals: At least USD 60,000 per year

Visa Duration and Dependents Inclusion

Qualified Applicants can obtain a Malaysia Digital Nomad Visa for 3 to 12 months. Extensions of up to an extra 12 months can be granted, enabling a maximum stay of up to 2 years. The visa also extends to spouses, minor children, and parents of the primary applicant, making it easier for families to experience life in Malaysia together.
